| MATTSON FILLS MULTIPLE-SYSTEM ORDER FOR AMD
Longtime Customer Adds Aspen Strip Systems to German Fab
FREMONT, Calif. — March 1, 1999 — Mattson Technology,
Inc. today announced the receipt of a multimillion dollar
follow-on order for multiple Aspen photoresist strip systems
from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), one of North America's
largest merchant manufacturers of integrated circuits (ICs).
AMD is using the equipment, which has already been delivered
and installed, at its Fab 30 site in Dresden, Germany.
Mattson's Aspen Strip tools were selected based on their
performance at AMD Fab 25 in the production of AMD's highly
successful K6 product line in Austin, TX. The Aspen ICP Strip
system was initially selected by AMD for its superior performance,
cost of ownership and technology roadmap.
"Mattson's damage-free processing capabilities and
low surface contamination results are the reason why Mattson
has outperformed the competition and become one of the leading
strip suppliers," said Brad Mattson, CEO of Mattson
Technology. "In just a few short years, Mattson has
become the ‘vendor of choice’ at more ‘Top
25’ companies than any other photoresist strip vendor."
The industry's move to smaller process geometries has led
semiconductor companies to place greater emphasis on low
damage results and residue-free photoresist stripping, which
is used in as many as 30 steps during integrated circuit
(IC) production. Mattson's Aspen Strip process uses inductively
coupled plasma (ICP) source technology to achieve residue-free
cleaning in one chamber, in situ, while competitors require
sequential processing in two chambers. Residue-free cleaning
eliminates the need for expensive organic solvents and reduces
environmental concerns inherent to wet stripping effluents.
"We chose Mattson’s Aspen Strip tool based on
the positive experience we have had with the tool at our
Austin fab," said Joerg-Peter Weher, Module Manager
Etch, Fab 30.
The transaction is the latest of several between Mattson
and AMD over the years. AMD became Mattson’s first
ever customer in 1991. Last summer, AMD was the recipient
of Mattson’s 500th system.
