| BRAD MATTSON WINS 1999 ENGINEERING AWARD OF DISTINCTION
San Jose State University Lauds Alumnus’ Contributions to Technology
FREMONT, Calif. — January 22, 1999 — San Jose
State University awarded Brad Mattson, CEO of semiconductor
process equipment supplier Mattson Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:
MTSN), its 1999 Engineering Award of Distinction. Mr. Mattson,
a San Jose State alumnus, is acknowledged for his distinguished
contribution to engineering in the area of semiconductor
manufacturing processes. He will formally receive the award
on May 13 at the 20th Annual College of Engineering Alumni
Awards Banquet, held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose.
"Brad Mattson has made a significant contribution to
the advancement of semiconductor manufacturing by simplifying
and modularizing the equipment platform used for semiconductor
processing," said Dean Donald Kirk. "Mr. Mattson
and our other distinguished graduates provide great inspiration
to future technologists and innovators. We are extremely
proud that Mr. Mattson is a graduate of San Jose State University."
"It is a great honor to be recognized in this way by
my alma mater," stated Mr. Mattson. "The university
has a first-rate engineering program, thoroughly preparing
graduates for Silicon Valley and beyond. The knowledge and
skills I gained at San Jose State University were instrumental
in the work I did later at Applied Materials, Novellus and
Mattson Technology."
The College of Engineering at San Jose State University
established the Engineering Award of Distinction in 1980
to recognize alumni who have made outstanding contributions
to the profession of engineering. To date, the university
has bestowed this award upon 46 alumni, including Mr. Riyad
S. AbuZayyad, General Manager of IBM Storage Systems Division,
and Mr. Douglas K. Carnahan, Vice President of Hewlett Packard
Company. Criteria for the award include professional achievements
and service to the community. The selection committee comprises
of a group of deans, faculty, past award recipients and a
member of the College Alumni Association. Dean Kirk noticed
Mr. Mattson’s accomplishments when he won the San Jose
Business Journal's Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Mr. Mattson developed a revolutionary concept in equipment
design, modular continuous processing. The Aspen platform
acts as single, core platform that integrates advanced wafer
handling robotics and software into leading-edge strip, CVD,
RTP, and isotropic etch products. This design incorporates
the productivity of batch processing systems, while capturing
the performance and control characteristics of single wafer
processing methods. With simultaneous and continuous processing,
Mattson’s process tools provide high throughput, low
cost of ownership and process control. Mr. Mattson also had
a key role in developing a unique susceptor-based RTP system,
which combines temperature uniformity with a processing speed
superior to conventional lamp-based systems.
Mr. Mattson earned a B.S. in Aeronautics from San Jose State
University in 1976 and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University
in 1978. He began his career as business manager of the chemical
vapor deposition group at Applied Materials, followed by
a brief stint heading LFE Technology’s Plasma Systems
Group. His entrepreneurial experience began in 1983, when
he founded Novellus Systems, Inc. Novellus became one of
the fastest growing companies in the history of the semiconductor
equipment manufacturing industry. Mr. Mattson’s second
start-up, Mattson Technology, eclipsed Novellus’ growth
records — enjoying 25% quarter-to-quarter revenue increases
for nine consecutive quarters. With the IPO of Mattson Technology
in 1994, he joined the handful of entrepreneurs who have
taken public two semiconductor capital equipment companies.
